Sergio da Costa e Silva, brasiliano di Rio de Janeiro, avvocato in pensione e ora imprenditore, è un grande appassionato di musica, senza essere un musicista. Con trasparente entusiasmo definisce “i più importanti musicisti del mondo” coloro che ha presentato nelle sue stagioni di concerti. Al suo ritorno in Brasile dopo un lungo viaggio nel 1996, l’allora direttore del Museo Nazionale di Belle Arti suggerì l’idea di creare il festival “Musica nel Museo”. Inaugurato nel 1997, compie oggi 26 anni, dopo aver ricevuto circa 30 premi nazionali e internazionali ed essere considerato a tutti gli effetti Patrimonio Culturale di Rio de Janeiro. Tradizionalmente, la stagione di musica classica in Brasile si svolgeva da marzo a novembre, mentre attraverso questo progetto si è estesa presentando concerti da gennaio a dicembre, senza interruzioni. La programmazione si divide nelle stagioni estate, autunno, inverno, primavera, oltre a offrire i Concerti di Natale e, ogni mese, tratta un tema o uno strumento: pianoforte, archi, legni, voce, percussioni, ponendo particolare riferimento agli aspetti più significativi del mondo della musica.

In Brasile Maggio è tradizionalmente il mese delle mamme e dei fidanzati: niente di meglio che esaltare l’arpa che ha una storia di oltre 5.500 anni. Per 15 anni il festival ha dedicato a questo strumento un periodo speciale, interrotto soltanto dalla pandemia di Coronavirus, quando comunque ha proseguito on line la programmazione dei concerti. Nel 2022 è ripresa la stagione nel mese di luglio, grazie a un sondaggio effettuato tra il pubblico, sempre entusiasta e numeroso. Il Rio Harp Festival è iniziato nel 2006 ospitando arpisti provenienti da sei paesi diversi, è cresciuto con il tempo e dal 2015 si è allargato a 20 paesi, poi nel 2023 sono 23 le nazioni rappresentate. I vari tipi di arpe, ritmi e suoni, spaziano dalla musica antica, barocca, ai classici europei, ai ritmi moderni, rock, heavy metal, passando per samba, chorinho, ritmi latino americani, jazz, blues, tango, suonati su tutti i tipi di arpe, dal classico all’africano e all’asiatico, diversi tra loro, ma tutti con sonorità straordinarie. In questi 23 anni sono stati effettuati più di 200 concerti che Sergio da Costa e Silva definisce memorabili. Arpisti di fama internazionale come Carrol McLauglhin, Deborah Hoffman, Elizabeth Remy Johnson, Marta Power Luce, Rita Costanzi, Baltazar Juarez, Maria Luiza Forero, Petricia Reyes, Manal Mohei El-Din, Kaori Otake, Miya Otake, Andreas Hofmeir, Andreas Mildner, Angela Madjarova, Tajana Vukelic Peic, Tine Rehling,Maria Rosa Calvo y Manzano, Mario Falcao, Phamie Gow, Claire Le Fur, Ernestine Stoop, Elena Zaniboni, Enrico Euron, Marcela Carbonne, Benjamin Creighton, Aurea Guerner, Jana Bouskova, Andres Izmaylove, Mariana Tudor,Liuba Klevtsoka, Milena Stanisic, Meriç Donuk, Emanuel Ceysson, Isabelle Perrin, Katerima Gima, Andrew Laurence King, Anna Verkholantseva, Aurelie Viegas, Marielle Nordman, Liuba Klevtsoka, Ana Guita, Catherine Michel, dalla Francia con il marito Michel Legrand (in una delle sale più importanti di Rio de Janeiro) si sono esibiti al Rio Harp Festival. Un concerto significativo fu quello di Claire Jones che dopo aver suonato al matrimonio dei reali at Buckingan Palace, nei giorni seguenti replicò il suo recital nella favela in Rio de Janeiro. Anche la Brazilian Harp Orchestra, diretta da Dean Maria Celia Machado e altri grandi nomi brasiliani hanno suonato sin dalla prima edizione del Festival: Helio Leite, Vanja Ferreira, Isis Figueira de Melo.
May is the month of mothers, boyfriends and nothing better than exalting the harp, a history of over 5,500 years. In these 23 years, he has been performing more than 200 harpers memorable concerts with great names of the international harp such as Carrol McLauglhin, Deborah Hoffman, Elizabeth Remy Johnson, Marta Power Luce, Rita Costanzi, Baltazar Juarez, Maria Luiza Forero, Petricia Reyes, Manal Mohei El-Din, Kaori Otake, Miya Otake, Andreas Hofmeir, Andreas Mildner, Angela Madjarova, Tajana Vukelic Peic, Tine Rehling,Maria Rosa Calvo y Manzano, Mario Falcao, Phamie Gow, Claire Le Fur, Ernestine Stoop, Elena Zaniboni, Enrico Euron, Marcela Carbonne, Benjamin Creighton, Aurea Guerner, Jana Bouskova, Andres Izmaylove, Mariana Tudor,Liuba Klevtsoka, Milena Stanisic, Meriç Donuk, Emanuel Ceysson, Isabelle Perrin, Katerima Gima, Andrew Laurence King, Anna Verkholantseva, Aurelie Viegas,Marielle Nordman, Liuba Klevtsoka, Ana Guita, and with different situations when the harpist Catherine Michel, from France, with her husband at the time, Michel Legrand played to the delight of the public that filled one of the most important concert halls in Rio de Janeiro. Another was the English harpist Claire Jones who, having played at the royal wedding at the Buckingan Palace, days later played in a favela in Rio de Janeiro. Lo scopo del Festival è quello di fondere l’arpa con altri strumenti, anche per l’integrazione sociale attraverso la musica nelle comunità a basso reddito, e, particolarmente nell’edizione del Festival 2023, integrare i gruppi indigeni con le arpe, suscitando il massimo interesse del pubblico e dei media in Brasile e anche all’estero. Sempre nel 2023 il progetto si è ampliato, ospitando a giugno il I BSB HarpFestival (Brasilia), il XVIII RioHarpFestival (dal 1 al 31 luglio), il VII SP HarpFestival (dal 12 al 16 luglio) e, nella versione europea, 10 città di 7 paesi (Francia, Italia, Croazia, Spagna, Portogallo, Belgio e Australia) in agosto e settembre. Così, RioHarpFestival va da giugno a settembre 2023, diventando il più ampio festival di arpa del mondo. In questi 18 anni, un pubblico di oltre 300.000 persone, moltiplicato per i social, ha già assistito ai suoi concerti. Questa è la mia più grande gioia, dice Sergio da Costa e Silva parlando del festival. Abbiamo fatto conoscere l’arpa, l’abbiamo portata sul palcoscenico e inserito il Brasile nel suo circuito mondiale.I nostro intento è quello di una espansione del festival, sia internamente in Brasile che a livello internazionale, aggiungendo ancora più arpisti provenienti da altri paesi. Il RioHarpFestival è caratterizzato dall’integrazione tra arpisti brasiliani e stranieri, uno scambio molto gratificante che ha prodotto significative collaborazioni. Inoltre, diversi arpisti che sono venuti qui finiscono per essere assunti da orchestre brasiliane che finiscono per aggiungere valore al loro cast.
